Keep Your Avatars and User Names The Same

by Mike Lieberman on February 26, 2010

I’m a big fan of keeping my avatar and user name consistent across each social media platform. This is one reason that I suggested to reserve your brand’s name across all social media platforms.

It makes it much easier for users to find you if you use the same name on each site. For example, I have CanarsieBK as my user name across all of my social media platforms.

There is more recognition and less room for confusion than if I were to have MikeLieberman on Twitter and MikeL on StumbleUpon and MichaelJLieberman on Facebook.

By having one name it helps to build a brand and for people to recognize it. Same thing goes for the avatar. People who are familiar with your brand should be able to see your avatar and instantly know who it is.

So if you decide to change your avatar be sure to change it across all sites. Changing your user name is a much bigger project, which is why you should check your name to make sure it is available .

If it’s taken somewhere, keep using variations until you find one that’s available and keep them consistent.
